What yarn count, filament count and fabric weight really tell you about fabric quality
Behind every fabric are technical details that shape how a garment feels, performs and decorates. Three of the most impor- tant are yarn count, filament count and fabric weight (GSM). Why do yarn and filament counts matter? Yarn count measures how fine or thick a yarn is. Higher yarn counts use finer yarns to create smoother, tighter, softer fabric surfaces. For decoration, this is essential: cleaner surfaces help deliver sharper prints, better ink definition and cleaner embroidery results. In fleece fabrics, filament count plays a major role. Filaments are the tiny fibres inside the yarn itself. Higher filament count fleece fabrics use more, finer filaments. Modern polyester micro- fleece now delivers warmth, durability and decoration performance in lightweight garments. In general, finer yarns help create cleaner surfaces and sharper decoration results, especially for printing. What about fabric weight? Grams per metre 2 (GSM) measure fabric weight, indicating thickness, warmth and structure, making it more closely linked to product usage than fabric quality itself.
A quick guide: A lightweight summer t-shirt, midweight polo and heavyweight hoodie can all be premium products. The real quality difference comes from the yarns used to build the fabric.
