1902 1930

In Alexander City (Alabama), Benjamin Russell founded the Russell Manu- facturing Company, setting the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of American sportswear. The company’s very first product, a knitted shirt for women and children, marked the beginning of a legacy built on craftsmanship and community. Driven by his love of sports and entrepreneurial spirit, Benjamin Russell not only created jobs in his hometown but also paved the way for outfitting athletes and teams across the United States.

In 1926, Benny Russell, the son of founder Benjamin Russell, approached his father with an idea for an all-cotton practice football jersey to replace the itchy, chafing wool uni - forms athletes wore at the time. Combining comfort and durability, cotton proved to be the perfect solution and by 1930 the first crewneck sweatshirt came off the Russell Athletic® mills, forever changing athletic apparel. Today, Russell continues to build on that legacy of innovation, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern performance design. The brand’s timeless sweatshirt remains a symbol of authenticity, worn by athletes and creators around the world.
