A closer look at recycled fibres Recycled fibres start life as waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or oceans, i.e. plastic bottles, fishing nets, old garments, spinning waste or textile clip-cuts. These materials are collected, sorted, cleaned and transformed into new high-quality fibres ready to be spun into soft, durable fabrics. But the term ‘recycled’ can be a grey area for fabrics, as there are no formal minimum requirements when a product isn’t certified. Although misleading claims are illegal and transparency about the recycled content is expected, there’s no certainty.
